Packaging, innovative Grocer Awards

Packaging of the Year with Grocer

The packaging shortlist of the year was announced with Grocer a few weeks ago, and we wanted to give you guys an overview of some of the best ones, in our opinion. Packaging has become something that can really grab the attention of your audience, and be done in a sustainable, innovative way. It is sometimes hard to find solutions to environmental problems, but in this day and age even small things can make a massive difference.

First is the Antalis and Mindful Chef Single Egg Box. Now this idea is so simple, but has made a massive difference. Mindful Chef is a cooking subscription service. Until recently, each egg was individually packaged in a plastic container and then inserted in the delivery box with the other ingredients. But customers were reporting significant breakages in transit. The team developed innovative one-piece packaging, made from 100% recyclable corrugated cardboard, which holds each individual egg in its own cushioned box to protect it perfectly during transportation.

Next is the Hellmann's mayonnaise squeeze bottle. Now, we have probably all related to scraping, shaking and squeezing a mayo bottle to try and get that last little bit out, which always seems to get stuck. Well, Hellmanns noticed this problem, and realised that it was also contributing to a lot of unnecessary food waste. So, they developed a new squeezy bottle that will ‘squeeze more out’, it has a special non-stick surface on the inside of the bottle featuring enhanced slip properties and  is also 100% recyclable.

And last but not least, Penrhos Spirits Gin Bottle. This gin bottle is stored in an aluminum bottle, opposed to glass. And you might be thinking why aluminium? A path of searching and experimenting lead them straight to recycled aluminium. They found that aluminium is the most recycled material, it is capable of being recycled multiple times without losing its original properties. Almost 75% of aluminium ever produced is still in the material loop today.

And that's it! We are always looking to find inspiration for new, innovative solutions for packaging, and it's always good to see what other brands are doing for their part in sustainable living.
